Dear Sir,

I have been favoured with your letter of the
11th inst., informing me that the Council of the R. Asiatic
Society had nominated me a member of a standing Committee
for superintending the publication of Oriental works accompa- 1 
nied by English Translations. I am fully sensible of
the honor done me, but as the precarious circumstances of
my health & general residence in the country, must prevent
me from taking any active part in the duties of the
Committee it is much my wish that I should be excused
from serving on it, 2  if a change of persons can be effected
without inconvenience to the business of the Society.   


With respect to the choice of Works, my own
opinions would lead me to recommend for translation only
such as relate to History, Chronology, Geography, Mathematics,
Astronomy, & Philosophy, and when these subjects cannot
now call to mind any of which versions have not been
already made into Latin or some other European language,
unless perhaps the Annals of the Ottoman empire, which are
voluminous. I am, Dear Sir,
